Reviews for The Frog and the Scorpion

Hiaasen/Brookmyre watch out!
I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent crime thriller. It was like a cross between the wit and pace of a Christopher Brookmyre novel crossed with the grit and edge of a Guy Richie movie, with the unexpected twists and turns of a Carl Hiaasen thrown in to boot! I was on the edge of my seat to the very end.
The other reviews outline the story well and I agree with the comments which praise this as a first novel because it comes across as much more accomplished. I loved some of the characterisations and if you have ever had any knowledge of South West London or Winchester you will really enjoy the local references!
This book really bodes well for Mr Glover - if he can continue to put out work of this quality he could gain quite a following.
If you want a fast paced, funny, brutal crime/gang thriller then this is the book for you. by Mark Haines -
Excellent British Thriller
The frog and the scorpion is also an Aesop fable, one that deals with the true nature of someone and their in ability to act only according to their nature. This gritty, edgy and vibrant thriller is an allegory of that fable. Dealing with the true nature of people, it looks at love, friendship, loyalty and betrayal and how these alter when money, greed and power influence them.
Adam opens his door to his ex, Melissa and a bag of money. Following her is the London underworld and before Adam knows it he is trapped in a spiraling world of lies and murder.
You think you know the characters, that you can read and predict their motives, but you are never sure what is real and what is a lie. The plot focuses on a bag of £100,000 and the woman that took it and her relationships with the other protagonists. She gets all of them, some innocent some not so, into an ever spiralling plot of theft, violence and murder.
This book has multi-narratives and characters you love and hate, but always believe in. There is alot to admire in the writing which is at times witty and yet never looses a sense of underlying menace. Apparently it is Glover's debut novel, but it reads like something from an established and accomplished author.
If you like your thrillers character driven with plots that twist and turn, but that always entertain, then The frog and the scorpion is for you. by Anthony -
Old style caper with a modern twist
This is a first novel written in a free flowing, easy to read style with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end as to which way Adam will jump. This is a book of its time but with a delightful old fashioned feel to it, very visual as if the author is writing with one eye on how the camera would catch the moment. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to Steevan Glover's next offering. by Gillian
