Out Stealing Horses
Translated from the Norwegian by Anne Born, Per Petterson's Out Stealing Horses was the winner of the 2006 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. It is a superb novel that deserves a large readership.
Instead of the dull realism of so many contemporary novels, Out Stealing Horses gives us privileged access to the ongoing conversation in the mind of the ageing narrator, Trond, as he looks back upon his life and a series of traumatic war-time incidents. The small details of the everyday are beautifully rendered; the story compelling. After the death of his wife, Trond settles in a remote corner of Norway where he spent his childhood holidays under German occupation. Memories and faces from the past re-appear as Trond tries to get to grips with the upheavals of his past. There is a profound sense of time passing in the book with the tragedies of human life set in relief against the awesome landscape. Anne Born should be congratulated on her fine translation and Petterson's excellent book should be widely read.
