We Are All Made Of Glue
It's been a long time since an author has taken me on a 'magic carpet ride' - Marina Lewycka, with her latest book "We Are All Made of Glue", has done just that.
Marina's main character, Georgie - failing marriage, challenging kids, failing novelist - meets Naomi Shapiro, fading, but still stylish, elderly European Jew who lives in a run-down old house. Naomi has a passion for out-of-date grocery bargains, rummaging through other people's rubbish, her numerous cats, and giving full and fearless marital advice.
The two become friends after Naomi names Georgie as her next-of-kin when she is admitted to hospital following a fall and Georgie realises her, Naomi's, vulnerability.
Whilst the main plot revolves around the relationship between the two women and the unfolding of the older woman's mysterious former life, a number of characters emerge to give the novel its intriguing and inter-connected sub-plots - a coterie of cats and a menagerie of men gather together with the odd 'bonkers' lady and tricky female social worker. The whole lot becomes 'glued' together - oops.
All in all, "We Are All Made of Glue" is a great romp and a really fun read! by Jacqueline Anderson
