Short Description for God's PhilosophersPresents a narrative history that reveals the roots of modern science in the medieval world. This book debunks many of the myths about the Middle Ages, showing that medieval people did not think the earth is flat, nor did Columbus 'prove' that it is a sphere; the Inquisition burnt nobody for their science nor was Copernicus afraid of persecution.

an illuminating read
The Middle Ages are often presumed to have been a dark period of human history during which the development of learning was held in check by an oppressive Church. Academic historians have long been challenging this prejudiced view but Hannam's book has the merit of making this subject attractive and even entertaining to the non-specialist. His book acquaints the reader with a number of important Medieval "natural philosophers" most of whom have been unjustly neglected. Hannam has the knack of lucidly and succinctly explaining complex ideas and the courage to make statements which seem, at first reading, controversial - he convincingly asserts, for instance, that in certain aspects Renaissance humanists were more reactionary than their Medieval predecessors. An illuminating read. by Joseph Camilleri
