Reviews for English for Presentations at International Conferences
Even if you believe that your presentations are great...
Even if you believe that your presentations are great, that the audience must find them extremely interesting because your findings are really exciting, you can still find many useful tips in this book to make your presentations more attractive. We have all had to sit through extremely boring presentations, in which the speakers were flooding you with pointless and redundant information, reading their slides with a flat tone, and testing your patience by speaking long over the assigned time. Are you so sure you don?t do any of this? English for Presentations at International Conferences was a great read for me, making it clear how I can improve my communication skills. Finally, if you are not a native English speaker, as I, you will find this book full of practical and simple instructions to improve your English for Presentations, increasing your self-confidence and helping you communicate in front of an audience with less anxiety. by ilaria
One word: useful!
I am a software developer and sometimes I need to present solutions to international customers.
In my opinion this book is a clear and simple tool for making effective presentations.
I found this book useful because it leads the reader step by step giving helpful tips for each work's phase.
Moreover this book contains a lot of recommendations to face audience in the most relaxed way, key point for delivering our concepts. by Robertoreally useful
This book is an excellent buy! It has hints and tips to help you with improving your presentations in English. I'm lecturer and researcher in an Italian University, and I suggested it to all my phd students and coworkers.
Everybody in my research group has find it extremely useful. by francesca.modugnoGood Choice!
I found this book very helpful to improve my presentations in English. As an international graduate student, I usually get frustrated seeing how easier is for native speakers to prepare better presentations in less time. This book is an excellent collection of tips and strategies that can help to overcome the difficulties related to present in English.
Compared to other books on the subject, I've found Wallwork's approach more effective, since it is specifically targeted to non-native speakers. The book is written clearly, and addresses the most commonly made mistakes. The section on the "useful phrases" is awesome.
Definitely, a great book! by PaoloGreat tips for getting audience attention
I am a researcher from Estonia. What this book taught me is that being from Estonia can actually be a huge advantage as no one knows very much about the country but most are curious to learn some interesting facts about this ex Soviet state. So one of things this book teaches you as that you can get audience attention at the beginning of a presentation by telling them some interesting statistic, showing them a great image on your slide, asking them a question, telling them something they didn't know before, or, in my case, beginning with a very short introduction to your country. I found that the advantage was that I felt more confident about beginning my presentation - I am proud to be Estonian - and also I get a good reaction from the audience when they learn that Estonia has the highest number of meteorite craters per land area in the world, that is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe, that Tallinn (the capital) is a national heritage site, and that Skype software was developed by some Estonians
This book also has some great tips on how to improve your pronunciation, how to reduce the number of mistakes you make with your English, and how to massively improve the text on your slides.
If all researchers had this book, I guarantee that conferences would be a lot more interesting! by Sofiavery interesting book
This is the first book I have read that was clearly written for me - a non-native English researcher with a reasonable acknowledgment of the language. I found very interesting this book because it goes against many of the traditional 'rules' of presentations. These traditional rules tend to produce presentations that are boring to watch and which are very similar to each other. This book offers some valid alternatives, which your prof may not approve of, but which your audience will appreciate. by Francesco
English for Presentations at International ConferencesBook rating
I am a PhD student in Comparative Politics and I have just used this book to prepare a presentation for a conference on the European Politics.
I found it really useful because it helped me reduce my worries about the English language by showing me that I should:
write out what I wanted to say
use very short sentences which are easy to say (and also easy for the audience to understand)
focus on pronouncing key words correctly (the book suggests using the Adobe 'read aloud' function to help with pronunciation)
write a miminal amount of text
and many other useful advices.
For the first time I felt confident about my presentation, and also my prof was really satisfied. I would really recommend this book to any researcher by lianaGreat book
I am not a researcher (I work in IT) but I am a non-native speaker. I found this book incredibly useful. I have always been afraid of speaking in public in English, but now that I have this book I have been able to overcome my fears and last week I made a demo in English of a new software. For the first time I managed to make a presentation in English with a smile on my face! Great book and really easy to access. by Serena
perfect for non native speakers
For my company I have to attend trade fairs and do short oral presentations for potential clients. For me this book has been extremely helpful. Before I was always nervous about speaking in English but this book has taught me that I need to prepare exactly what I want to say and then write it out in English. This has enabled me to revise my 'speech' by:
* using short sentences which come out of my mouth easily
* focussing my attention on my pronounciation (the book explains how to find out the correct pronuncation of words you are not sure about)
* practising in front of my colleagues who then give me suggestions about how to make improvements
I also learned what to say when I don't understand what people ask me. This is very important if I do not want to make a bad figure! by Caterina OrlandiVery useful for non-native speakers
This book is the perfect solution for non-native researchers like myself who have to present at international conferences - something that I personally hate doing! I highly recommend it! by Sara Pecchia
