    Great Debut5

Amy Tucker This is the first adult offering from Sarra Manning, who normally writes fiction for teens, and it must be said, she does that very well. When I read the description for Unsticky, I wasn't so sure about it, but having been a Sarra Manning fan since my teens, I gave it a go. And I am so very glad I did.

The plot is a difficult one, and if it were written by anyone else, I doubt it would have been dealt with in such a smart and emphatic way: Grace is struggling; she has little money, is knee high in debt, is constantly passed over in work and has a troubled love-life. Then she meets Vaughn (no first name) who is so unlike anything in her life and who asks her to be his mistress, offering her position and money. Grace is almost forced into her decision to become Vaughn's mistress, if only by her finanical situcation, but at the end of the day she does make the decision for herself, with little concern for the consequences. And of consequences there are plenty.

If there is one thing that Manning excels at, it is writing fractured, complex characters and both Grace and Vaughn are both that. Both are absolutely flawed, but it only makes them more appealing to read. Their scenes together, of which there are many, are blistering and full of chemistry. Grace is silly and neurotic, but sweet and funny whereas Vaughn is sarcastic and rude, but really (when you get to know him) a pussycat with a big heart, and a fondness for deserts. The two characters should never ever fit, not with all the fighting they do, but somehow they work and you can't help but root for them.

Manning also deals with the consequences of Grace's choices and also with the huge issue of her crippling debt and with both Grace and Vaughn's personal issues, and also with the age gap between them. All of it is dealt with well and all additional characters are very well realised. (I swear, sometimes I wanted to slap Lily senseless.)

I reccomend it to anyone who loves a good opposites-attract, unlikely pair kind of romance and for anyone who loves fashion. Coz, oh wow. Thats all that really needs saying. by Amy Tucker
