A Quiet Belief in Angels
R.J. Ellory's moving, meticulous novel tells the story of the tragic life of Joseph Vaughan. No ordinary crime novel, A Quiet Belief in Angels is far slower, and far more considered, than most books in its genre, concerned as much with the effect of crime as with the crime itself.
As a young teenager, growing up in the '50s, Joseph's life was fatally disrupted by a series of dreadful killings and mutilations of some of the young girls in his small rural hometown. Determined to try to protect his friends from the killer, Joseph creates a gang called 'The Guardians' who are, of course, powerless to prevent more awful murders from taking place aroun them.
No one was ever caught -- and the horror lasted a whole decade. Then one of Joseph's neighbours is found dead with articles that belonged to the dead girls all around him. But the past won't stay dead and buried: the real murderer is still alive and the killing has begun once again.
Haunting and compelling.
