The book spans the period from prehistoric and Roman Manchester to the city in the modern day, focusing on the nineteenth century when it was the largest international marketplace for cotton goods. The city was a metropolis of warehouses and mills, humming with the clatter and roar of the Industrial Revolution. It sprawled and thronged with people, leading the way in transport innovation, with the construction of Britain's first completely manmade waterway - the Bridgewater Canal - and becoming a terminus for the world's first intercity passenger railway - the Liverpool and Manchester line.
