Reviews for After You'd Gone
All About Alice
This is an excellent debut novel, and it is no wonder O'Farrell became instantly popular after its publication. It isn't as good as her last one, since it could have used some paring down to make it just a bit tighter and pointed. But her style is enticingly strong, her characters are vivid and how she weaves the past into the present is practically lyrical. This is also a surprisingly fast read, and you'll find yourself soaking it up like a sponge. So while I'm giving it four out of five stars, I still highly recommend this novel as an excellent introduction to Maggie O'Farrell's work in general. by Davida Chazan

A Beautiful Read
Having just read The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, I couldn't wait to get my hands on another book by Maggie O'Farrell. After You'd Gone is quite a different book but it did not disappoint. Alice Raiikes impulsively takes a train to her home town in Scotland and arranges to meet her sisters at the station. Something she sees there, however, has a devastating effect on her and she immediately returns to London where, brooding over what she has seen, she is hit by a truck. As in Esme, the story is unravelled in layers, a method which keeps you turning the pages while dinner burns. In the end, the revelation of what Alice saw at the station comes as no surprise because of what we have learned about her and her family along the way but the journey to get there is truly memorable. A book about love, grief, families and secrets, all deftly handled. I can't wait to read more Maggie O'Farrell. by Susan Wight
