Is There a Book in You?3

Mark Thwaite Many people who read a lot would like to write for a living: the bibliophile is, often, an author manque. Considering that about 10,000 books are published in the UK each month one wonders, with everyone at it, just who hasn't written the novel that we are each promised is inside of us!? And one wishes they'd stop: too many books already. The best advice, as Auberon Waugh was fond of saying to anyone who wishes to write, is ... don't! However, that seems unduly mean-spirited. In the age of communication, would-be writers don't need holding back, but they may need a wee bit of advice. The market is crowded with writing self-help books, and many of them do an excellent job, but Alison Baverstock's Is There A Book In You? stands out. It is a compendium of great nuggets of advice from an array of writers tied together with words of wisdom -- and questionairres! -- from the author, a writer who has herself written 13 books. By far the best counsel, and it is hardly original, comes from Stephen King: "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot." by Mark Thwaite
