Reviews for Gaudy Night

Vanessa Westermann "Gaudy Night" is a British whodunit from the Golden Age of crime and the second to last novel in Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mystery series. Harriet Vane, an independent and witty mystery writer, returns to Oxford for a class reunion. She has her misgivings, however, because of her scandalous past, involving being tried for murder (detailed in Sayers' "Strong Poison", in which she first meets Wimsey). True to her worst fears, Harriet receives a poison pen letter. This is a unique detective novel because it doesn't involve a murder, but is focussed on discovering the secret of the vandalisms and the identity of the university 'poltergeist'. This novel sparkles due to the brilliant repertoire and building sexual tension between Lord Peter and Harriet. It's satisfying to finally get more of the personal side of Wimsey's character!
A great read with a strong conclusion. Sayers meant this to be the last novel Lord Peter was to appear in, but followed it with "Busman's Honeymoon" due to popular demand (a brilliant bitter-sweet end to the series).
