  • Tattoos with a quirk3

    Georgia "Inked" is a collection of four stories by authors Karen Chance, Marjorie M. Liu, Yasmine Galenorn & Eileen Wilks. The main theme, as the title may suggest, concerns magical tattoos and the way their properties play a part in each story. Yet this collection has also another common denominator mainly that all stories are to a certain extent crime novellas. The chief characters are called in to investigate a crime or to apprehend a criminal.
    The first story is set in the Cassandra Palmer universe, but it runs parallel to it, introducing new characters. Packed with action and humour readers get to follow the protagonist as she is trying to solve a murder case. Well written, fast yet comprehensive, the story unravels itself harmoniously until the last paragraph. 4/5
    The second story is a Hunter Kiss novella. It bears all the marking of Ms Liu's intense and eerie writing. Here too the protagonist investigates a murder. Excellent descriptions and a colourfull narrative make this the darkest of the stories. On the downside, if you are unfamiliar with the Hunter Kiss series you may find it difficult to tune in to the subtext of the plot, which is unfortunately important. 3/5
    The third story is an Otherworld novella. This one pales in comparison to the other three and becomes the weakest link in the collection. It feels sloppy and shallow. Also it doesn't help that it is set in world complicated enough to make readers feel that they miss a lot while reading it. People unfamiliar with Ms Galenorn's writing style may also find it explicit. 2/5
    The fourth one is set in the Lupus series universe, but like the first story, it maintains its individuality. A well written story, that makes you think you are in a Columbo or Matlock episode. Well laid out plot that never sees a dull moment or an inconsistency in its narrative. 4/5
    So if you like your urban fantasy laced with crime and mystery or alternately if you don't mind your cops and robbers story be filled with werewolves, wizards, faeries and the lot, this collection should be included in your "to read"-list. by Georgia
