  • A little unclear but shows promise3

Amanda Hawes Those with sensitive stomachs or an aversion to gore should really leave this book on the shelf. When Guild Hunter Elena is summoned by the ruling Archangel of New York, Raphael to track down a pschyopathic murderer, her new acquaintence will challenge her views on Singh's new universe of angels, vampires and hunters.

The book is very much a slow burner, the actions chugs along at a steady place and doesn't really spike often. Perhaps the worst grievance here is Singh's mistake of leaving certain, profound things very much unclear and unexlpained by the end of the book. Many threads are left open and the reader is left with a sense of unfulfillment. Unexplained reasons for why Elena is the way she is and why she reacts the way she does left me slightly unbelieving of the story that unfolded. Scenes left half finished meant that by the end I was still trying to work out just why Elena felt so strongly on such subjects as family and gore.

That aside, the universe Singh has built shows great promise. A world where Archangels and their kin rule over mankind and create vampires to form their households sounds like it could develop into some good stories. Since it should be noted that this really is just an Urban Fantasy genre and doesn't appear to want to make the transition into full blown romance, readers wanting more along the lines of Singh's Psi/Changeling series would be better off waiting for Branded By Fire later this year.

Angels' Blood is the second book in this series, the first being an e-release available at Singh's site. The third will be a novella available in an anthology late 2009. I am still undecided as to whether I will invest my time in following the Guild Hunter series but feel I may just fall back on the Psi/ Changeling universe and leave the Guild Hunter one for an impulse read when the new release list grows dry. by Amanda Hawes
