  • A return to form for Day5

Amanda Hawes Grace, commander of a newly established rebel outpost and training ground, is also a descendant of the Fae Goddess Diana - Huntress and Goddess of the moon. She and Alexios - a Warrior of Poseidon and Atlantis - have been tasked with creating an alliance between humans and Atlanteans as well as training the new generation of recruits to the rebel cause. However, it is fast becoming obvious that their feelings for one another are more than simply diplomatic relations.

Alexios was broken by his time as a captive of Anubisa, Vampire Goddess of Chaos and he finds these new feelings difficult to deal with, worried that the underlying darkness will rise to the forefront of his mind and injure Grace. Asked by his Prince to retrieve one of the seven jewels of Atlantis, Vampires Bane, which is believed to be near the new rebel outpost as well as establish diplomatic relations with the commander there.

This is a wodnerful return to form for Day after the disappointing weakness of the previous book, Atlantis Unleashed. While at times Day's use of language can be glaringly flowery and the overarching plot to retrieve the jewels of Atlantis is overlooked in favour of a plot around the new rebel outpost and the protagonists, the story felt a lot more real and polished than Atlantis Unleashed. The romance is believable and hot between two equal warriors and, it's nice to see Day introducing new elements to the ongoing plot which may hint at a spin off series in the future.

Catching up with old characters is nice, but it was really good to see her completely focus on Alexios' and Grace's developing relationship as well as moving the overall story along considerably, with a new plot twist that Atlantis must deal with.

Overall a strong book to add to the line and a big improvement on the previous book. Surprisingly, the novel itself feels like it could stand alone or among a series and for new readers who are thinking about trying Day and Atlantis, while they may want to start with Atlantis Rising, the first book in the series, also may want to pick this one up off the shelf should the first book not be available.

I happily anticipate the next release next month of Atlantis Redeemed. by Amanda Hawes
