Streets ahead of first novel
Well, Any Human Face is awesomely good. It's streets ahead of Little Monsters and reads more like a fifth or sixth novel than the second.
A really marvellous evocation of a past Rome - that strange exciting time with drunken conversations in odd bars, late-night car drives and that incredible mixture of ex-pats and off-beat Italians.
Loved the Birdman, who comes over as elegaic and tender, not to mention completely believable. (Oh, and the ancient aunt in Calabria putting in a claim for his flat - only in Italy and a pity that English readers won't feel the full resonance of it).
The couples -all of them alive, and with their place in the "web" of the city.
Beautiful beautiful ending - the "survivors" meeting for a meal (there is definitely something sacral about food combined with the union of people who care for each other) while the very last page is pure poetry. by Joanna Leyland
