Catherine Evans If you've ever swum, breathed, or dreamed of surfing, Tim Winton's Breath is a must read. Breath is a deceptively easy read. Bruce Pike (Pikelet), an ambulance officer, attends a teenage suicide that reminds him of his teenage years and we're taken back into his memories. As an outsider in a small town he is befriended by Loonie, another loner. The boys share a wicked sense of adventure and need for adrenalin. This discovery occurs in the local waterhole where they compete at holding their breath. It takes them to the forbidden beach, where they learn to surf. They challenge each other to more daring waves. They meet a retired surfing champion, Sando, and his American wife, Eva, who, in very different ways, change the boys' lives.

In Breath you become Pikelet. You live through his adventures, hardships, confusion, losses and ecstatic exultations. You forget yourself. To take the reader on that sort of journey is the mark of a genius writer. Congratulations Tim Winton.

Breath is a book that has haunted me long after the last page. The story is alive in my mind and will be for many years to come. by Catherine Evans

Liz A very evocative read about going to extremes and dealing with the damaging after effects. This book never lets up and Tim Winton takes you on a wild ride - surfing the big swells with edgy characters daring to go further. An interesting insight also, into characters on the edge of a small community. A great read - highly recommended. by Liz
