Disappointing
I approached this book hoping for a general, starter-type book on German history. Something that would then help me find other books that would lead me into more specific areas, but I abandoned this book part way through because I found Winder's meandering, conversational style too frustrating. He'd make an off-hand reference to something that actually sounded like it could be interesting, but immediately follow it with a boring travel anecdote. I couldn't really work out what he was trying to do with this book. His style is self-deprecating, and I think he was going for engaging and mildly funny, but I didn't get enough of a strong sense of his personality for him to come across as likeable. by Dianna Lang
