Fun for young & old...
A novelisation of a movie based on a classic children's picture book. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Not at all. It's been years since I read â??Where the Wild Things Are', and I've not yet seen the movie (co-written by Eggers), but â??The Wild Things' is a wonderful work of imagination, staying true to the world created by Maurice Sendak, but expanding upon it. Max's regular life at home is the focus of the first part of this book (it's not until almost 100 pages in that he meets the wild things), and by fleshing out this bit, the story becomes much richer. Once Max is crowned king by the wild things, his struggles to keep them happy (and not eating him) are all tremendous fun. Well worth reading if you loved the book as a child (or as an adult, for that matter). I believe this is technically considered a children's/young adult book, but it'd be a hard-hearted adult who didn't enjoy it just as much. by Joel Bateman
