|Short Description for The Adventures of Tom SawyerFrom the episodes of the whitewashed fence and the ordeal in the cave to the trial of Injun Joe, this novel is redolent of life in the Mississippi River towns in which the author spent his own youth. Beneath the innocence of childhood lie the inequities of adult reality - base emotions and superstitions, murder and revenge, starvation and slavery.

Quaint & entertaining
Another classic that I have always been meaning to read. After reading Huckleberry Finn I realised that I hadn't read the first story about Tom Sawyer so went about rectifying this.
I found TS a lot easier to read as the writing is more standard English than the vernacular of the South. The story is still fantastic but most of all, I loved how quaint the book is. It is rather out of date of course (being written over 100 years ago). The cultural references are cute & entertaining. However, the boys could easily be the same in the current day. Their bravado, their dreams, their games. The themes of mystery & adventure are universal.
It is easy to see why this book is a classic & I hope it is one that will be continued to be studied in schools. by Cassie
