This land is your land
When I first picked up "The Grapes of Wrath", Steinbeck's quote printed at the back cover caught my eye.
"I've done my damndest to rip a reader's nerves to rags, I don't want him satisfied", John Steinbeck
And so, I started reading the book. Every time without fail, when I put the book down, I will read Steinbeck's quote at the back cover again. And every single time, I thought to myself
"S**t, he's right"
Despite the story's setting (poverty during the American Great Depression in the 1930s) which is kinda alien to us in this day and age, "The Grapes of Wrath" never failed to move me at every time I pick the book up. The story explores timeless themes such as perseverance, sacrifice and the extent people will go to for the love of the family.
Even though it's published in 1939, every character in the book is still relevant and inspiring even until today.
In the end, you can be defeated a million times, you can even lose everything and even have your dignity robbed... the only thing that makes you human is integrity, hope and family.
All in all, this is a really awesome book. It is such a shame that I never read this book when I was younger. The Grapes of Wrath is definitely something that you want to have on your book shelf.
To get into the mood, listen to Woody Guthrie's "Dust Bowl Ballads" while reading. If not, Bruce Springsteen's "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" is fine too. by Chia Pi Wo
