An Australian "To Kill a Mockingbird"!
My favourite Australian book for this year is, without a doubt, "Jasper Jones" by Craig Silvey"
It is set in a dusty country town in Western Australia, in the middle of summer holidays. Silvey's writing brilliantly evokes the tedium and ennui that I remember suffering as an early teen, when the long hot days stretched out interminably with nothing much to do and nowhere much to go. Of course, this situation changes for Jasper and his friends, as things take a sudden, unexpected turn. Craig Silvey's writing is witty, funny and sensitive and the main characters just leap off the page. The adolescent hero, Charlie Bucktin, is warm, wise, funny and tormented - and has made me look at my own son in a very new light! As a 'coming of age' novel it deserves a place on the school curriculums in this country.
It truly is an Australian "To Kill a Mockingbird"! by Amanda McInerney
