a remarkable obsession
Tracy Chevalier has once again produced a novel on an obscure topic so well researched that you feel you know something about fossils by the end. The two main characters are such opposites - Elizabeth Philpot a middle class spinster obsessed by fossils and Mary Anning, a working class girl similarly obsessed, but also charged with using her obsession to feed her family, yet their friendship and companionship is so believable that you empathise when it is put to the test. Both characters are forced to recognise their place in society and its restraints in getting taken seriously in what was perceived as a rich man's recreation.
The backdrop of the windswept shore and cliffs of the Dorset coast adds extra drama to the story and the historical accuracy of the moires of the times brings it to life. A truly spellbinding tale. by Eileen Hyland
