  • Books everyone should read

    • You like potato and I like potahto
    • You like tomato and I like tomahto
    • Potato, potahto,
    • Tomato, tomahto.
    • Let's call the whole thing off

Books everyone MUST read. Books everyone WILL read. Books everyone ABSOLUTELY COULDN'T PUT DOWN. Books THAT ARE JUST LIKE TOTALLY THE MOST AWESOME THING IN THE WORLD AND THAT EDWARD IS JUST SO GORGEOUS AND THAT BELLA IS A SKANK. Books that I WOULDN'T BE SEEN DEAD READING. Books that ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS READING. Books THAT I'M NOT ACTUALLY READING BUT WANT EVERYBODY TO THINK THAT I AM READING...

    Well, you get the picture.

    So, what's the deal?

We're putting together some new bookmarks to go out with every order and one of the themes we came up with was 'Books everyone should read'. Potentially interesting, potentially troublesome. Obviously, we're not going to stand up and tell everyone what they should read so we thought we'd ask for some suggestions. But, with a twist.

Because we ship to over a 100 countries all over the world we thought it would be nice if you could give us the names of books to read in your particular country.

We've got a drop down list below with the countries and space for five entries, and they don't all have to be in English either. Would be nice to mix it up a bit because we all know that people are the same where ever we go, that there is good and bad in ev'ryone. We learn to live, we learn to give each other what we need to survive, together alive - books!

If you enter your name and address we'll have a little pile of books to give away to the lucky winner out of a hat.

    • But oh, if we call the whole thing off
    • Then we must part
    • and oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart

ps All the titles in the graphic above are some of the books on a should read list I would have made in 1992. I'd never suggest they should go on any such list today. They are merely for illustrative purposes :-)

Fantastic idea!! I'd love to see a list separating out the books from each country. That would be great to see and be able to buy books based on where the authors reside. I also REALLY like the bookmarks and am a little deflated when I don't get one with my order.

This was a really difficult task. I love reading and read widely. Being restricted to Australian books helped.

Terrific idea - This should encourage people to read a wider selection of books from authors they may not have considered previously.

I put together a list that covered all the aspects of reading I love- a gripping drama, a heart felt tale, intrigue, just for fun and topped off with a Harry Potter one! You cant call your self a reader and not have read at least the Philosophers stone. It would be a crime not to have taken the time to see what the hype was about...and besides, millions of people cant be that wrong, its very clever!

I made a list of books that I consider to be classics and/ or incredibly well written with a moral or feel-good feeling that the reader can take away. I would love to see one or two of my suggestions make it on to bookmarks!

Yes! Someone else mentioned "Playing Beatie Bow". I read it in primary school and I remember it to this day; it has such an impact on me. The film was made long after I left Australia, but I hope to see it one day.

I love reading. I believe that a book should take you out of reality and into the world of it's characters. You should be able to see what the characters see, smell what they smell, touch what they touch and imagine pictures of their surroundings. Books for me are a feast for the senses and if an author can write a book like that they are truly an artist. My favorite books I have read again and again as I never get sick of them. My ultimate favourite book is Perfume: The Story Of A Murdered- Patrick Suskind. There is no other book like this in the world. Perfume is an entire book based on the sense of smell and I have never read another book the same. In fact after reading Perfume many other books appear not as well-written to me. Has anyone else found another book like that? If so what is it? Thank you for the opportunity of this competition, it is very interesting to know what other people read overseas. The best Australian Books I have read are kids books- Hating Alison Ashley - Robin Klein and Playing Beattie Bow by Ruth Park. Most of the books I read are by Spanish or Indian authors as I find Australian authors are not as poetic. Melinda

      1) Nice to find that you won't be giving up the bookmarks. 2) It would be nicer still if somehow, somewhere you could post final lists of top 5 from each country. 3) I'm guessing that Adam was somewhere between 16 and 25 in 1992 . . . His books are ones best read & appreciated in those years, at any rate.
