Short Description for The Worst Street in LondonHalfway up Commercial Street, one block away from Spitalfields Market, lies an anonymous service road. The average pedestrian wouldn't even notice it existed. But unlikely though it may seem, this characterless, 400ft strip of tarmac was once Dorset Street - the most notorious thoroughfare in the Capital; the worst street in London.

  • Fantastic Book5

Rachel Upton I can't add more to the review of Peter Jones (for this book), it is a fantastic book, really well writern. Extremely interesting and everything the earlier review says. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in life in the past. I can't wait to read more of Fiona Rule's books. It would be great if she wrote the history on more streets and roads. I'm sure interesting things went on in all the streets in the past, it's a great book to read if your doing your family tree too as it makes you think how your ansestors may have lived.
A true delight to read. by Rachel Upton

    Best Review of Worst Street4

Peter Jones Fiona Rule has managed to write a most interesting & informative book. Besides being well researched and clearly written by an intelligent & informed author; the style of the book is best described as being more akin to the voice over to an excellent documentary. There is an recurring theme at the end of each chapter which neatly links the reader to the next one. Cleverly not just concentrating 100% on Dorset Street, Ms Rule takes the reader along byways of interesting & informative historical, political & social subjects affecting the Dorset St and hinterland. Being one of the lucky people who had an intimate relationship with Whitechapel, Stepney & Bethnal Green I can relate to the physical aspects so well described. Some more photos would have been welcomed and it is suggested a reader buy a large scale map of the area in Victorian days. Makes referencing places so much more interesting. For people like me i.e. Jack the Ripper scholars this book is a unique and a near vital addition to a collection. More than worth the money.
