A stranger in a room
Damon restlessly looks for love but he himself is unable to give any love. He expects salvation from people he meets but doesn't ask for help. He keeps moving from place to place to stop thinking, to avoid a confrontation with himself. He goes through people the way he goes through places, silently clings to them for a while hoping to find peace and stay, then, as empty as at the start, suddenly flees. The first encounter is a dry mind-game, the second is an awkward fantasy, the third is a shocking, progressive descent into suffering and despair. In the third part he finally gives some of himself instead of just expecting to receive and the story grows in intensity - fear, pain, anguish slowly surface - as it develops in all its inevitable desolation. The painful side of the human condition, life and death pass each other scraping. No joy, no amazement, no amusement in this journey. A bare, cutting style that powerfully renders the atmosphere of incertitude and helplessness throughout the narration. by Agnese Mariotti
