Jungle Morality
This book was quite the voyage appearing to shift the temporal & spatial but as a work of fiction the experience was frighteningly real as we follow people placed in a wholly alien environment. The characters respond to their various greeds & needs, exploiting people & places for their own version of 'the greater good'. So complete was my immersion in the narrative that I felt the oppressiveness on many levels & examined my own moral responses. The answers were never neat. I almost wished for a different ending that maintained my ethical anxieties but was ultimately glad Patchett rendered at least some distance from my discomfort. Perhaps my intense exploration in the Amazon was adequate, perhaps not long enough? An excellent & truly thought provoking read. by Lisa Preston
