Good Read
For someone who does not know Greek history well, I am allowing Madeline Miller to guide me through the story, her version. Sure, I had just finished reading the twisted version of the gay son of Achilles as told in An Arrow's Flight: A Novel by Mark Merlis and very much influenced by Brad Pitt portraying Achilles (don't I wish in this book too) in the movie Troy.
I was surprised to be introduced to the humane side of Achilles - the one who allows himself to fall in love with Patroclus. There is much gentle side of Achilles written in this novel, unlike the brief reading I had done on him. Somehow, Achilles in this novel is shaped to win hearts of the readers and not so much tuned to be heartless and cold. I like it.
This book surprised me too on how casual the Greek gods and goddesses in descending to meet the semi-gods and worshipers. It was written in a way that it was hardly a shock to anyone to find gods and goddesses walking among the human.
Much effort was made to fit the events into the story, without betraying far from the said legend. I was happy I learned a thing or two from this novel. Not extremely great book but a book that I'll most likely recommend to others. by Jonathan Oon
