Reviews for Sarah Raven's Wild Flowers
Wild Flower Paradise
This book absolutely delights in every way. Normally my reviews include a few critical quips in amongst the praise but this book gets all praise. It's expensive but it is a big book with the most interesting and fullest information on each wild flower I think I have ever read. Nothing is skimped - that's why the book is big. It's clearly a labour of love for Sarah and I certainly love her labours. The information is organised very well and that, on its own, must have involved a great deal of planning but the reader is the beneficiary because the whole text works easily and sensibly.
In addition to Sarah's text the photographs are excellent. For a change, here are generous-sized photographs where the flowers can actually be seen sufficiently well to make positive identifications. The continuous runs of double-page flower-scapes that divide the chapters-catergories are heart-breakingly lovely - heartbreaking because so much British countryside is under threat.
The book is too big and heavy for field work but it's not a pocket guide. It's just the most comprehensive encyclopaedia (if you like) of wild flowers that needs a place on every nature-lover's bookshelf. by Gisela Radant Wood
