  I am reading through a copy of this book at the moment, and I would definitely recommend it as an introduction to Kanji learning. Len Walsh writes simply and directly, and you will be surprised at how fast you can start to learn the kanji. He also provides simple pictures that show how the kanji originated, and gives you a link between the (usually quite abstract) current symbols, and the original (usually more recognisable) pictures. I do recommend this book - it is helping me to learn, and it is fun! by Karen
