Reviews for The Rabbits
The Conquerors
I discovered Shaun Tan by special recommendation of my favourite bookseller. You have to actually see these books to get a proper idea of their splendour. This one would be a very good sample, at a generously reasonable price.
The books are meant for all ages, including children. Now when I was a child the tales were full of ghosts and witches and pirates and the like, but somehow it all ended well ("... and they lived happily ever after"). But this one does not end well at all, it is like a nightmare, and worse, because it evokes all the past and present invasions of peaceful, harmless people by merciless conquerors.
For consolation, I had to go back to the first pages where everything was still all right. And great art is, of course, a consolation in itself. by Colette Frentz
