Full description for On Sociology: Illustration and Retrospect v. 2

  • In the preceding volume, Goldthorpe (emeritus, Nuffield College, Oxford U., UK) laid out a program for unifying the fragmented field of sociology by combining the ability of quantitative analysis of large-scale data-sets to provide sophisticated descriptions of empirical social regularities and the use of rational action theory as a tool for specifying the patterns of action and interaction out which such social regularities are produced. In this volume, he presents six essays that illustrate the application of this combined approach to questions of class analysis, explanation of educational differentials, social class and the differentiation of employment contracts, and similar issues. He also includes two essays reflecting on the historical development of sociology and its pertinence to his proffered program. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
