  • Essential for Horror Fans5

Gregor Matheson Horror is such a broad field. One of the last books I reviewed on Bookdepository was Fevre Dream by George RR Martin, which was essentially an action thriller. Ligotti's only story collection in print 'Teatro Grotesco' is at the other end of the spectrum; essentially a series of grotesque prose poems.

However, this is possibly Ligotti's best work and it may appeal to fans of action thriller horror as well as those who like horror to be dark and disturbing. And disturbing it is.

The plot revolves around Frank Dominio. On the surface Frank is a fairly mediocre, bland employee, but he secretly seethes with loathing and anxiety. Despite his loathing for his company and co-workers, he proposes a new project for them to work on.

Later on he gets fired from the company as the result of an apparent conspiracy. His co-workers expect Frank to just leave quietly as they work on his project. But he has other plans.

Genuinely disturbing, superbly written, darkly hilarious and (rarely for Ligotti) tightly plotted, this is one of the greats of modern horror fiction. by Gregor Matheson
