Reviews for Lord of the Abyss

  • Rich and magical world4

Jennifer Juckes I was given a copy of this book to review.
This book is the fourth book in the Royal House of Shadows series, and follows the story of the youngest child Micah. It's part of the series, but I found that I could read this book easily without having read the other books in the series; although like with any series it does benefit the reader to start from the first book.
I was really pleased to get this book as I have read some of Nalini Singh's Psy-changeling books - which I loved. So with this in mind I had high expectations for this book. Well, Lord of the Abyss did not let me down; it delivered an amazing story which captured my heart, imagination and took me to another realm.
I really loved the rich and magical world that was created. There seemed to be a good mix of interesting characters which helped to pad out the story. My favourite character was Jessa the Brownie; she was a sweet and endearing character.
I have to mention that in places there were some steamy and erotic moments, it left little to the imagination..... But to be honest this only heightened the connection and relationship between Micah and Liliana. This is a dark and tantalising romance story with a mixture of magical and mysterious elements. The Lord of the Abyss was a very fierce character and it was interesting to see Liliana bring out a different side to him.
I did like the story and I thought it was very well written. I will definitely be checking out more books in the series, they are written by different authors but I think this may give a different angle to each book, plus each book is written about the different members of the Royal Family so it will be interesting to see things from their point of view. Each and every one of the children was sent to different parts of the realm into different lands; so I can't wait to find out about those! by Jennifer Juckes

  • Hot, Romantic, and Sexy!4

CYP As always, Nalini Singh comes back to tease us with more unconditional love and hot sex scenes! I have always loved Singh's writing, and it was no different in LORD OF THE ABYSS.

LORD OF THE ABYSS started out with a brisk pace, throwing Liliana right into the midst of the throne room in the Black Castle. So the suspense and thrill level has always been on the up high. And from there, it never got boring.

Liliana's role in the book was to infiltrate the Castle, get to Micah, lead hero, Lord of the Black Castle, Guardian of the Abyss, and youngest heir of Elden, and help him remember a past that he cannot recall, and get him to Elden by the midnight in a few days time to defeat her infallible father, the cold and ruthless Blood Sorcerer, before midnight in a few days, before Elden falls true to the evil clutches of the Blood Sorcerer. And saving an entire kingdom isn't exactly an easy task for one young woman.

Our lead heroine, Liliana, wasn't pretty or perfect, and naturally, Micah's reaction to her was rather neutral. But as the story progressed, and Micah and Liliana got to know each other better, the romance that developed was so sweet! The way Micah behaved around Liliana made her forget about her imperfections... Made me forget her imperfections. He made her feel hot and beautiful. All that and both personas' basal characters held firm.

Liliana, though flawed and with a low self-esteem, had a heart so pure and compassionate. They were just too cute together, especially since Micah's never been around courting couples and as such, he is, in a way, very child-like when it comes to wooing Liliana. He's very honest about his feelings, very straightfoward and explicit in showing what he wants.

There is a lot of affection between them that made reading it such a joy. The sexual tension's a killer too. The plot's a little fantasy-like with the usual Paranormal Romance touch. But I daresay it bordered on being an Erotica. There were quite a number of explicit sex scenes in here! Not that I'm complaining, but it did slow down the plot. Upped the sexiness, but debilitated the action.

All in all, I did like this book. A lot. I loved the action, the romance, the suspense, the characters... Everything! by CYP

Review from I'm Loving Books Blog3

    I'm Loving Books 3.5 stars

When I originally opened up this ebook from Netgalley my first thought was that it was super long! Especially compared to the previous books in the series. But then I thought perhaps it was longer since it was wrapping up the whole series. I think this was one of the main reasons why I didn't end up enjoying this as much as everyone else did. Imagine my surprise when I was only at 53% and the book ended! I didn't realize that there was actually a bonus book by Nalini Singh at the end of the ebook (which I didn't read). But basically I was kind of still in gear for more story when it ended.

That aside, I really liked Micah and Liliana. They're a very sweet couple. Micah was kind of this sweet (to Liliana) yet oblivious man. He hasn't really been around too many women in his lifetime so when Liliana comes along he is mostly innocent and his feelings towards her are fairly new to him. I thought this part of him was really sweet. He would be super blunt about his feelings all the time and it was sort of endearing.

Now, while I liked Liliana's personality and I thought she was a good person and perfect for Micah, I did have one problem. I'm not a huge fan of the hot guy loving the ugly duckling kind of stories. I'm not really a shallow person I don't think, it's just that it doesn't really happen too often in real life so it makes it seem unrealistic to me. Of course I don't think all heroines in books have to be supermodels. But in this book Liliana is basically the town ugly person -- right down to mean whispers whenever she would walk by. So I just didn't really like that part of it. Of course it obviously made Micah seem like a more genuine person because he still saw her as beautiful, but it's just not my thing.

The story was kind of fun. There was a bit of adventure going on and I enjoyed the time at the castle. But there wasn't much to it. I guess after seeing everyone's raving reviews for this one, coupled with the fact that I really love Nalini Singh's writing, I think I was expecting more from it. I also kind of expected the face off with the Blood Sorcerer to be more climactic and was a bit disappointed with how all that played out.

So overall this was good, but for me it wasn't really as good as I was expecting. It was a good wrap up, but I think my favorite from the series is definitely still Jill Monroe's story, Lord of Rage. It was a pretty interesting concept and world, but I think that overall it wasn't really a very strong series despite the awesome authors who played a role. by I'm Loving Books
