Already my favourite book of 2012
A friend bought me The LA Commandments for Christmas and once I started reading I couldn't stop. A fictional trip to California was much welcomed, especially when the Irish weather is dreary and wet. I've been to California before - on a J1 to San Diego - and it was great to revisit the places that me and my friends had visited on our travels. Experiencing it through the eyes of the Irish twenty-somethings in the novel also made it more realistic - it was like me and my friends all over again; I could really relate to hitting the beautiful Californian beaches, then the bars and clubs afterwards. Duffy's portrayal of friendship, family life and relationships is so real. She addresses some very difficult, personal issues but does so in a relatable way. The tone is truthful, believable and I find myself thinking about the characters and their lives even though I've finished reading - their lives could easily be mine or my friends and that's why I enjoyed this book so much. I can't wait to get back to LA! This is the type of book that I'd read again and again, especially lying on a sunny beach somewhere... roll on the summer! by P. Whelan

FABULOUS PAGE TURNER
The L.A.Commandments is an insightful uplifting read taking the perspective of two twenty something Irish girls Jo and Susie- done with the doom and gloom of Ireland post Celtic Tiger - who head off to Los Angeles to change their lives. And their lives do change, maybe not in quite the way the girls anticipated. We share their ups and downs and by the time the book is over,we know them and want to know where they are going and what they are doing next.
It is a story of friendship, romance, love, and courage. It starts out with our two girls taking their courage in their hands and betting on themselves and L.A to give them a better life than the one they were experiencing in Ireland. I really liked how Gillian Duffy is not afraid to get real and deal with topical issues relevant to her characters generation, history and context. Alcohol abuse and it's impact is just one of these themes which recurs throughout the book.
While this book deals with serious issues, it is witty, fast paced and light hearted. It also shows us L.A in such a way that I will have to go there and visit all those gorgeous beaches and restaurants, maybe read the book again and use it as a guide. This is perfect for the plane, the bed, the beach or wherever and whenever you want to escape. by Catherine O'Connell
