Reviews for How the Scots Invented the Modern World
Exasperated
"Oh God - the previous reviews mention England more than Scotland and show a high level of the 'Scottish cringe'. The inability to accept praise when it's given and to criticise the positive tone of the book is appalling but only to be expected from Scots - a Scot couldn't have written this book because they don't have the self-confidence to do it. People take note - Scotland is NOT defined by it's relationship with England and being embarrased & self deprecating when praise is given is NOT the only way to review this book. It lays out the important contributions Scots have made and, being written by an American, avoids the usual round-shouldered, shuffling, wimpy embarrasment displayed by so many Scots lacking in self-confidence.
