a mesmerising macabre masterpiece
HELLBOY has to be be one of the most enjoyable comic book series ever created. And that is thanks to the minds and talents of Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy. Mignola has crafted a comic book rich in myth, folklore, and horror, but the key word is FUN. His art is just sensational - a visual feast for the eyes! When i purchased this book, and read it for the first time i spent more time just ogling at the artistic renderings than actually reading it! Because Hellboy is a visual experience. Mignola's unique style has been described by Alan Moore, the god of comic books, as German Expressionism meets Jack Kirby. And he could'nt have been more correct in his description. Hellboy is a joy to read!
One of the main draws is of course Hellboy himself, but it is also about his sidekicks, fish man Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman. It is also the surreal creation of other odd characters, like the 'Frog' monsters, Rasputin (and in book two, it gets weirder, we have a decapitated talking head, aa Gorgon, a vampire, a witch and a 'Chicken Leg House'!) Seriously, you have to see it to believe it! This comic book is like no other. And i for one, love it!
The comic book Seeds of Destruction differs somewhat from the movie (Hellboy). The story line briefly revolves around the birth if you will, of Hellboy into this world. The Nazi via the help of Rasputin, open a portal to release the Ogdru Jahad, seven beasts of the apocalypse. However, thanks to the American's, they fail, but not before a creature manages to get through. That creature is a baby demon, with mini horn, and a big stony right hand. Professor Bruttenholm, or 'professor Broom' as he is later known, takes charge in looking after this creature whom they name Hellboy.
Rasputin however has unfinished business.
Years later, we see Hellboy alongside his colleagues, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman who are agents for B.P.R.D, Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence, investigate some weird goings on at a house. And it is whilst they are there that all hell breaks loose!
If you are new to the Hellboy universe, then boy are you in for a treat! Do not dwell on it, just click on 'buy'. You will not regret it!!
NOTE: hellboy is a comic book series which you can read in any order, it will not really affect the story. But make sure to read volume 1 and 2 in order. I must pay special mention to Volume 10; Hellboy: The Crooked Man - it is one of the most scariest, most enjoyable book in the Hellboy series, and is in my top 10 list of my favourite comic books, be sure to check it out! by Mahbub Ahmed
