  This book was clearly the first attempt that helped Muriel Barbery reach the pinnacle that was The Elegance of the Hedgehog. It has the same wonderful, evocative, lyrical language but lacks the character and plot development. It was too short and too simple. I wouldn't recommend it, but am grateful that Muriel revisited the characters and raised the bar which resulted in the wonderful 'The Elegance of the Hedgehog'. by AD
