Full description for Express Yourself!
In "Express Yourself", the third book in the series, children focus on how the great artists relay their emotions on canvas via their masterpieces. Children are drawn into the compelling, dramatic world of expressionism from modern expressionists (Van Gogh, Munch) to German Expressionists (Kirchner, Kandinsky) to Abstract Expressionists (De Kooning, Pollock); each artist is represented by a famous artwork, paired with questions to get kids thinking about what they see. The projects and activities then encourage them to express their own feelings through paintings, prints, collages, sculptures, and drawings inspired by the techniques and ideas utilized by these artists, masters of expressionism. The "Art Explorers" series offers a new approach to learning art. Rather than emphasize historical information, these books encourage kids to describe and interpret what they see in famous artworks, then try some of the techniques themselves. Each book highlights 5-8 famous artists. For each artist, a colour reproduction of a famous work is paired with exploratory questions. An information blurb explains how the work was made and the artist's intention, emphasizing facts of interest to kids. Following are art projects that tie into the artist and his/her techniques. The activities are illustrated with examples done by actual kids.
