Reality Check
Most people often dream, however fleetingly, of the good life on a farm, far from the rat race. I'm not so sure that Kristin Kimball ever even wondered about that, even for the briefest of moments, before she found herself clutching a hoe in amongst the broccoli. And yet one experience, an interview with farmer Mark, sends her shooting off into a new trajectory that lands her on a dilapidated farm in Essex, NY. Reading about Kristin's experience as she relinquishes vegetarianism, tries to tame her cynicism, leave behind her "normal" life and keep up with a passionate, if slightly naive husband was, frankly, rivetting.
This book will challenge the way you think of your food and your life. It will challenge any fantasy you have about moving to the country and living an idyllic life among the tomatos. Kristin gives a very frank account of her journey and she doesn't paint the glowing, rosy picture you might expect. She has many doubts, she gets very dirty and she's almost always tired. Things don't always go to plan and there isn't a definitive happy ending.
On the surface, there doesn't seem much to recommend a life like Kristin's. But farming gets under your skin as much as the dirt gets under your nails and before long you can't imagine doing anything else. I don't know whether I loved this book so much because I came from a farm and it speaks to that part of me but I do know that I absolutely loved it and I highly recommend it. by Rebecca Bateson
