Reviews for Cleaving
Not what I was expecting, sadly
After reading Julie and Julia by the same author, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Julie Powell's new book, Cleaving. I assumed the title "cleaving" is a play on words, about "leaving" (her husband) and "cleaving" the term used in butchering when delivering a cutting blow... I think I was correct - the tortured relationship she has with her husband (yes, the one who supported her through her Julia Project the year prior), and butchering, both feature in the story. The story is set in the year following her epic Julia Project, in which the protagonist is driving around New York state striving to find her next project (to master the art of butchering) and to escape an addictive relationship with a man only referred to as "D". It is not light reading, and most of the time, not enjoyable either. After the light-hearted, easy, humorous writing style of Julie and Julia, I was expecting a similar escape into laughter and the world of "what if?" with this book. Instead I got a tortured blow-by-blow account of dead meat and a dying relationship with her husband... not what I was expecting, sadly. by A.J. Leiper
