  • A wonderful read5

Tania Hershman This novel is set in Cambodia and the country is also a character in the story, so strongly is it felt here. We meet Deborah, an American who runs an orphanage, and we meet all "her" children, each one beautifully-portrayed. There are secrets, strangers arrive, there is tragedy and joy. This is a story that will grip you, with its very real and flawed protagonists and fascinating setting. I read the book straight through, I was utterly absorbed. A wonderful novel, highly recommended. by Tania Hershman

Good read -- interesting place, interesting plot5

John Anderson I've been following Sue Guiney's work for a couple of years now -- both in hardcover and on the stage -- and she's always been very good at dialogue, scene setting and tone. With this effort, she expands into a more journalistic format and shows she's a pretty good reporter. It's genuinely exotic in setting and compelling in plot. It will be interesting to see if she stays in this track or goes back to the more etherial stuff. by John Anderson
